Prince William County Board of Supervisors enact Outdoor Lighting Standards
On December 21. 2004 Prince William County Board of Supervisors passed an update of its Zoning Ordinance that includes new outdoor lighting standards. Prince William County has taken a big step towards improving the quality of life and improving safety in the county. Here is a copy of the ordinance.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Unanimously Approves Outdoor Lighting Standards
In a public meeting on June 16, 2003, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved new Outdoor Lighting Standards. After more than three years of work, the Fairfax County DPZ has developed one of the most comprehensive ordinances in the nation. The new ordinance will help control glare, light trespass and skyglow in one of the most rapidly growing counties in the country. VOLT started working with the Fairfax County Zoning Administration in June of 2000 with a training seminar and has been involved ever since. We wish to thank the Zoning Administration staff for a job well done.

SB1301 Outdoor Lighting Enabling Legislation Dies in Senate
SB1301 was defeated in the senate by a vote of 21 to 18.

SB781 Regulation of Outdoor Lighting near Public Waterways defeated in House 85 to 13
SB781 Outdoor Lighting Regulation on Public Waterways was defeated in a full House vote 85 to 13 after passing the Senate 32 to 7 and being reported by the House CCT.

VDOT Amendment to SB379 Becomes Law
On March 24, 2003 SB379 was amended to include VDOT. With this amendment VDOT formally agrees to use fully shielded fixtures in the majority of its new roadway lighting installations. When not feasible from a safety perspective, VDOT will use semi-cutoff fixtures when needed. In addition, VDOT will agree to design new installations adhering to IESNA standards. VOLT was proud to be a part of the committee that drafted this amendment and thanks VDOT for it's open and cooperative position throughout the process

SB379 Passed and Signed into Law!
This newly signed law directs the Virginia Department of General Services to purchase shielded outdoor lighting fixtures for Virginia State installations.
The bill had broad bi-partisan support passing by 89-8 in the House and 38-2 in the Senate.
A big thank you goes out to Senator Mary Margaret Whipple from Arlington who sponsored the bill and worked extraordinarily hard for its passage!
