SB1301 Outdoor Lighting Enabling Legislation Dies in Senate

What happened?

February 3, 2003

In what appears to have been a bitter display of partisan politics, SB1301 died in the Senate today. In a surprising turn of events, the bill actually had passed with a vote of 21 for and 18 against. Senator Norment (R) of Williamsburg then asked that the bill be reconsidered and when SB1301 came up for a second vote, 3 Republican Senators had switched their votes to no and the bill died 18 for to 21 against. The vote went pretty much along party lines with all but two Republicans voting against and all Democrats voting in favor. A very special thanks to Senator Bill Mims (R) and Senator Kevin Miller (R) for putting the good of communities above politics.

Here is how the vote went. Please take a moment to send an email thanking your Senator if they supported the bill. If your Senator helped kill the bill, let him know that he didn't represent your interests when it really counted.

We will consider all the options regarding reintroducing the bill next year and will keep you informed.

Sincere thanks to all of you who contacted their representatives and in an effort to get SB1301 passed.
